Colonial Virginia Capitals: Jamestown and Williamsburg

John Smith, the famous explorer and mercenary, played a crucial role in the establishment of the first permanent English colony in the New World at Jamestown in 1607. Despite the challenges of poor weather, swampy terrain, hostile natives, and inexperienced settlers, Jamestown managed to survive through the hardships and became the capital of the English colony for much of the 17th century.

This project transformed Williamsburg into a major tourist destination and America’s premier living-history museum.
